Interarbor Solutions Blog HP's purchase last year of EDS came just as talk of cloud computing options ramped up. So how does long-time outsourcing pioneer EDS fit into a new cloud ecology? Is EDS, in fact, a cloud provider? And how will IT departments properly factor their decisions on what to keep on-premises in data centers versus placing assets and workloads on someone else's cloud infrastructure? We pose these and other "fluid sourcing" future questions to David Gee, Vice President of Marketing at EDS, in an interview by me, BriefingsDirect's Dana Gardner. It comes as part of a special BriefingsDirect podcast series from the Hewlett-Packard Software Universe 2009 Conference in Las Vegas this week. ... (more)

Cloud Computing and Virtual Images

Cloud Expo on Ulitzer A look at several different cloud computing solutions will reveal a technological enabler present in almost each one. The enabler I'm talking about is the use of virtual images. I cannot think of many, if any, cloud computing solutions that provide software elements (i.e. more than just servers, storage, memory, etc.) that do not use virtual images in some form or fashion. Of course, one of the reasons virtual images form the backbone of many cloud solutions is obvious. Virtual images provide the benefits of server virtualization. We can activate many virtual images on the same physical machine, thus allowing us to achieve multi-tenancy (multiple operating systems and software stacks installed on the same physical machine). Besides driving higher hardware utilization rates, it also provides us the capability to run heterogeneous software envi... (more)

IBM CEO Seeks Heir

IBM CEO Sam Palmisano is going to designate his heir apparent in 12-18 months by naming a president or operating chief, according to the Wall Street Journal. Handicappers say the mantle is likely to fall on the shoulders of Virginia Rometty, 53, who led the integration of PriceWaterhouseCoopers' consulting arm, got her services card punched and in the three quarters she's been running sales has managed to up the number 5.8%. Obviously she would be IBM's first female captain. Also reportedly in the race are Global Services chief Michael Daniels, 56, who may be too old and Rodney Adkins, 52, the African-American, who held the server unit together after Robert Moffat got arrested in the Galleon Group insider-trading case. He would be IBM's first minority CEO. He's recently been given the job of chasing business in Africa but lacks services experience. Palmisano is r... (more)

Software Defined Networks (SDNs) - A History Lesson

[Gracely's Theorem - 99% of all new tech ideas are just old tech ideas + bandwidth + faster CPUs] I'm a big fan of history, especially technology history, because it gives us such wonderful guidance about what to expect with each new "technology disruption". Just like the history of mankind, technology tends to follow repeatable trends, actions and mistakes. The latest trend that I've been carefully watching is around Software Defined Networks (SDNs). Today's SDN discussions are primarily focused on how new paradigms will change the architecture of IP networks and how network-level services are delivered and managed. This shift is being led by companies like Big Switch, Nicira, Embrane , and Cumulus, but it's being closely watched by incumbents like Cisco, HP, IBM and Juniper. At the core of SDNs are a couple of basic principles: If the hardware and software functions... (more)
