Keynote By @Sandy_Carter at @CloudExpo | @IBMcloud #IoT #AI #ML #DL #API

Growth hacking is common for startups to make unheard-of progress in building their business. Career Hacks can help Geek Girls and those who support them (yes, that's you too, Dad!) to excel in this typically male-dominated world. Get ready to learn the facts: Is there a bias against women in the tech / developer communities? Why are women 50% of the workforce, but hold only 24% of the STEM or IT positions? Some beginnings of what to do about it! In her Day 2 Keynote at 17th Cloud Expo, Sandy Carter, IBM General Manager Cloud Ecosystem and Developers, and a Social Business Evangelist, discussed why this matters, how innovation will benefit, and how to foster an interest in tech. Learn why women need to take risks and embrace failure to give them the courage to crash through the glass ceiling. Sandy will share some of her own experiences and advice with five career h... The Zombie Apocalypse and Other Cloud Infrastructure Concerns | @CloudExpo #IaaS #Cloud #OpenStack

The Zombie Apocalypse and Other Cloud Infrastructure Concerns By Liz Durst Last month, I returned from an overseas trip to a friend’s wedding to find the zombie apocalypse happening in my neighborhood near downtown San Jose. People of all ages and demographics united together in what looked like strange cult gatherings in public parks, stumbling around the streets of the South Bay with eyes glued to their phones and occasionally yelling something strange like, "OMG I hatched a Nidoking!" Cars would come to abrupt halts in front of me at unexplained times—I half expected a scene from the movie Zombieland to unfold where Woody Harrelson would leap out from an SUV ready to give me the nickname Minnesota and help navigate safely back to my parents’ farm. Pokémon Go was released in the US on July 6, 2016. Unless you've been living off the grid in a yurt (in which case yo... (more)

Unveiling the java.lang.Out OfMemoryError

When we encounter a java.lang.OutOfMemoryError, we often find that Java heap dumps, along with other artifacts, are generated by the Java Virtual Machine. If you feel like jumping right into a Java heap dump when you get a java.lang.OutOfMemoryError, don't worry, it's a normal thought. You may be able to discover something serendipitously, but it's not always the best idea to analyze Java heap dumps, depending on the situation you are facing. We first need to investigate the root cause of the java.lang.OutOfMemoryError. Only after the root cause is identified can we decide whether or not to analyze Java heap dumps. What is a java.lang.OutOfMemoryError? Why in the world does it occur? Let's find out. What Is a java.lang.OutOfMemoryError? A java.lang.OutOfMemoryError is a subclass of java.lang.VirtualMachineError that is thrown when the Java Virtual Machine is broken or... (more)

Leveraging Social Media in Your Business

In my last post I explained that before you embark on using social media for your business, you need to first determine your objectives and define your strategy. And this strategic planning does not and probably should not involve any specific social media channel at the outset. A good article that outlines the steps for the planning and strategic upfront work is "10 steps to a practical social media business strategy" by Allen Bonde, where he describes the fundamental and basic steps that must be done upfront, such as creating a mission statement and a marketing plan, assigning ownership and defining policies, all before getting to specific social media channels. Now assuming that you have done your strategy homework, let’s take a look at how we can leverage various social media channels in an integrated and orchestrated fashion (in terms of specific tactics) to ma... Anatomy of a Java Finalizer

A couple of patterns that could cause Java heap exhaustion were identified from years of research at IBM. One interesting scenario was observed when Java applications generated an excessive amount of finalizable objects whose classes had non-trivial Java finalizers. What Is a Java Finalizer? A Java finalizer performs finalization tasks for an object. It's the opposite of a Java constructor, which creates and initializes an instance of a Java class. A Java finalizer can be used to perform postmortem cleanup tasks on an instance of a class or to release system resources such as file descriptors or network socket connections when an object is no longer needed and those resources have to be released for other objects. You don't need any argument or any return value for a finalizer. Unfortunately the current Java language specification does not define any finalizers for a... (more)
